I love motorsports, mainly track racing and recently the art of drifting. Now you would be wondering the connection of dentistry and the elite racing category of Formula One.

Yes, the Formula One drivers are dashing with similarly handsome smiles but that is not what I am referring to.

Enter SpykerF1 team. The managing director for the team, is Dr. Colin Kolles is a trained dentist. The German dentist hails from Ingolstadt (yes, the city where Audi’s HQ is situated) and still practices dentistry. It seems dentistry was the family business, his father having been a personal dentist to a past Romanian leader.

Dr. Kolles entered racing through Kolles Racing and TME Racing in the Formula Three. He was appointed the managing director of the Jordan/Midland F1 Team and now currently the SpykerF1 Team.

Despite running a Formula One team, Kolles has still been called upon to use his dentistry skills. Before the 2005 Turkish Grand Prix, he had to perform dental surgery on driver Tiago Monteiro, who was suffering from toothache severe enough to potentially keep him out of the race. He also performed a similar procedure on Midland’s other driver Christijan Albers at the 2006 French Grand Prix.

Perhaps we’ll see more dentists venturing into more diverse fields in the future. All the best to Dr. Kolles.
