During pregnancy, we can often see a reddish swelling over the gums of a pregnant mother. This reddish swelling often bleeds easily and may pose some discomfort both physically and aesthetically.
This condition is call pregnancy epulis. Usually it is caused by exaggerated body response towards the accumulation of plaque, that is why the oral health is at an upmost importance during pregnancy. Poor oral hygiene would increase the chance of the appearance of pregnancy epulis.
A large pregnancy epulis may require surgical removal under local anaesthesia but usually it will regress upon delivery.
