A child was playing with friends in the playground and suddenly the child fell. The child got up and a permanent tooth fell off.
As a parent or guardian or an adult bystander, you should not panic. If a permanent tooth fell off or gets avulsed, please follow the guidelines below.
- Pick the tooth by the crown. Do not handle the root.
- Check to see if the root surface is clean.
- If dirt is present on the root surface, rinse gently with cold fresh milk, saline or tap water in order of preference. Do not scrub the dirt off the root.
- Place the tooth the right way round into its socket.
- Get the child to bite on a clean, folded handkerchief to keep the tooth in place.
- Go to the nearest dental clinic as soon as possible.
If, for any reason, it is not possible to replant the tooth at the site of accident, store the tooth in a suitable medium to be transported to the dental clinic. The best transport medium is the tooth socket itself.
- Never transport the tooth dry.
- Do not transport in tap water.
- Transport media are:
- Fresh or UHT milk (cold) and not condensed or powdered milk.
- Physiological saline (0.9% sodium chloride). Do not attempt to make
your own saline solution.- Saliva - get the child to spit into a clean container. Ensure the
tooth is kept moist at all times.- In the event the above media is unavailable, the tooth should be
placed in a clean plastic bag for transportation.- The tooth may also be placed in the buccal sulcus (the inner cheek).
However this is not recommended for fear of accidental swallowing or
aspiration.- Go to the nearest dental clinic or hospital emergency service as soon as
possible. For dental professionals: Please right click and save here for the Clinical Practice Guidelines of Management of Avulsed Permanent Anterior Teeth in Children, MOH Malaysia 2003 (Open with Adobe Reader).
