A friend rang me up before getting his wisdom tooth out. He had an appointment to remove his wisdom tooth at a private dental clinic somewhere in the Klang Valley.

Is six hundred ringgit the normal charge for removal of a wisdom tooth?

I’d say that is about right. Costs may vary from clinics and even location. In small towns, it may cost between fifty ringgit to around two to three hundred ringgit. The recommended cost for removal of wisdom teeth is around five hundred ringgit or more. It is quite expensive as it would usually involve minor surgery to have the wisdom tooth removed.

Any complications that should be expected?

Bleeding is one of it. Though in a normal person, bleeding should be minimal and proper suturing should be sufficient.

Expect swelling in around two to three days, a week the most at around the surgical area. Proper medication is usually prescribed for pain and swelling. Normally I would also give at least two days of medical leave as well.

One potential complication is the injury to the nerve that sometimes lie quite near to the wisdom tooth. Injury may occur during the extraction, and would present as numbness around the area. Most of the time the numbness is temporary, the normal sensation would return in a few weeks. If there are any doubts, please refer to your dentist for a thorough examination.
