You will start of as a First Year Dental Officer (FYDO). It’s more like being a houseman. This one year will actually teach you more than what you’ve learned during the five years of dental school, as during this time you will learn to apply your dental knowledge when treating your patients. Chair-side manners, ability to tackle difficult and demanding patients and actually providing proper care will be learned, applied and tested time and time again.

You will also (most of the time) develop interest in a specialty (e.g Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, etc.). Try out each and every specialty attachments as it will give you a good overview of what the specialists do.

You will also be on call. Oh yes, dental surgeons also do on calls. You will learn to assess MVA cases (Motor Vehicle Accidents) which would often include head and neck injuries. It is important to revise on your head and neck anatomy as you would be dealing with bleeding, pain and often emergency situations. You will clean wounds, assess severity, stop bleeding, wire up jaws due to fractures, suture laceration wounds and if you’re lucky you get to see rare cases of dozens of maggots in the oral cavity.

It will be one heck of an experience. Cherish what you will learn and take it head on. And most importantly, enjoy yourself while doing it!
